Joseph Louis Barrow Armstrong (Daniel Louis Armstrong), referred to as “Satchmo” and “Pops,was a jazz trumpet virtuoso, singer, and music director. He was renowned for his charismatic stage presence and gravely voice almost as much as for his trumpet-playing, Armstrong was one of the first truly popular African-American entertainers who’s artistry and personality allowed him to “cross over”, whose skin-color was secondary to his music in an America that was severely racially divided.
